In the Best Of in my head, Kelly Hogan deserves to be listed among other modern accomplished country/folk interpreters such as Linda Thompson, Rosanne Cash, Cassandra Wilson, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt; and her pure approach to interpretation has more in common with Patsy Cline’s than any of those inimitable women.
She’s no virtuoso, however, and you’d have to squint to see the heart on her sleeve. But it’s there.
I suspect she’s far too humble and shy to ever gain national recognition like the others on that list; but, her live shows can take you away. When she’s on, her roadhouse blues can get awful dirty (She sings with Jon Langford and the Waco Brothers, after all.) and her live-only covers make me think AM radio was a lot better than it was.
This Magnetic Fields’ cover may not improve on the original — although I prefer it — but it’s a helluva lot more purty.
