Last week, 13-year-old Asher Brown, of Harris, Texas, killed himself with his stepfather’s 9 mm Beretta after yet another humiliation acted out by bullies at his school.
As if it wasn’t enough that classmates taunted him constantly — for his small size, his religious beliefs, his sexuality — school officials ignored his parents’ attempts to protect him.
The day before he committed suicide, a student kicked Asher down a flight of stairs, and when he tried to get to his book bag, another student kicked his books and then kicked him down another flight. The school district’s spokeswoman says that no one — no teachers, no students — ever reported any incidents of violence against Asher.
He “seemed sad” that night, his mother said. He didn’t tell them what was wrong.
The next morning, he came out to his stepfather, David — who “was fine” with it — and then he went to school, came home, and shot himself.
Yes, Asher was gay, and that made him more vulnerable to his fucking horrible peers, and maybe it made it easier for his teachers and staff and everyone else to ignore their torments. As a gay lady, I am furious and sickened and so sad. And everyone should be disgusted and horrified by this story. Everyone. Because he was a kid. Because kids everywhere are fucking horrible. Because no one protects the smaller kids, the weaker kids, the sadder kids.
Asher Brown was just a kid, you guys. He was just a fucking kid.
Dan Savage started the “It Gets Better” project on YouTube in an attempt to bring hope to gay kids in shitty situations. It’s pretty amazing, and it’s growing every day. Check it out here.
The project was started in response to 15-year-old Billy Lucas’s suicide in Indiana a few weeks ago. He was gay. He was tormented. No one did anything to stop it, to protect him.
Nor did anyone do anything for Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover, Justin Aaberg, Seth Walsh, Eric Mohat, Jaheem Herrera, Marcus Wayman, and on, and on, and on.
More information about Asher Brown is here, here, and here.
